12 Days of Moments with Christ Day 2

I’d been hurt and try as I might I could not get over it. It wasn’t anything huge, but it was enough to where it occupied too many of my thoughts. Like, WAY too many. It weighed me down way more than I liked to admit. For months. Part of me hated the negative feelings, but part of me felt justified in it. You know?

But one day in my grief and pain and shame- and there was shame, shame in letting it consume too much of me- I had enough. And with President Nelson’s voice echoing in my head, “Expect miracles,” I decided to very specifically ask God to help me with this. To help me be rooted in charity. To see people as He does. To get the animosity out of my heart about this situation. To help take this burden from me! I begged.

What happened next was not me. It just was NOT. I felt my heart totally soften, making way for peace. A kind of peace I’d been trying and trying to find for so long about this particular thing. Like, all my bitter feelings, in that moment, were gone, swept away, like magic.

There was my moment. Christ knowing exactly how I felt and taking it from me. I literally felt Him do it. I don’t know how else to explain it.

Since then, I’d be lying if I said I never felt any negative feelings again about that situation. I am human, after all. But it doesn’t burden me anymore. Through the atonement of Christ, that burden was taken from me that day, and you cannot convince me I could replicate those feelings all by myself.

Elder Tad R. Callister said, “Sometimes He removes the affliction, sometimes He strengthens us to endure, and sometimes He gives us an eternal perspective to better understand their temporary nature.”

I’ve experienced all of that! And most of the time it is NOT removed… at least not so quickly. But that was one time Christ took it right off my back and carried it, and I’m grateful for that small miracle and manifestation of how the atonement can work in our lives.
