A Few Words

A few weeks ago I ordered new dinner plates from Amazon. When they arrived, I excitedly opened the package. (You know you’re old when you’re excited about plates.) I pulled them out and to my disappointment realized they were TINY!

I said, “What! THESE aren’t big enough for dinner!!”

And without missing a beat my son happily pointed out, “They’re big enough for mac & cheese!”

That they are. 😆

And I actually use them all the time for various things.🤷‍♀️

Small, but enough.

Recently I confided in a friend that I was having a rough morning and jokingly asked if she had a punching bag. Twenty minutes later she showed up on my doorstep with some Oreos... and a tiny homemade “punching bag.”

Small, but enough. 😭❤️

Joseph Smith received several “mini” revelations from the Lord for different people. In section 23, the Lord has just “a few words” (1, 3, 4, 5) for Oliver, Hyrum, Samuel, Joseph’s father, and Joseph Knight.

Just a couple sentences for each of them. Doesn’t seem like much.

But maybe “a few words” is enough. Maybe “a few words” is all that’s needed in that moment. Maybe “a few words” changes lives.

“Maid, arise” (Luke 8:59)

“Come and see” (John 1:39)

“Follow me” (Matt. 9:9)

“Lazarus, come forth” (John 11:43)

“Thy son liveth” (John 4:50)

“Mary” (John 20:16)

“Peace, be still” (Mark 4:39)

“Go, and sin no more” (John 8:11)

“Be not afraid, only believe” (Mark 5:36)

“Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole” (Mark 5:34)

“Feed my sheep” (John 21:16)

“I that speak unto thee am he” (John 4:26)

Some of my clearest and most powerful experiences with personal revelation have been words coming to my mind. “Practice.” “Agency.” “Charity.” “You don’t need to know that right now.” “Do you feel that?” “You’re missing it.” “It’s time.” “They are a gift.” “He is real.”

Just a few words. Personal. For me.

So, maybe pay attention...

Give heed to the things that seem small;

They are enough.

By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.” (Alma 37:6)
